History and background of the WorldGenWeb project

In 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database. This was to provide a single genealogy reference point for all counties in Kentucky. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked to enable individuals to be identified across the State. Volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of the web page.

In June 1996 the USGenWeb project was organized and 2 weeks after the beginning of The USGenWeb project, the WorldGenWeb project was begun. From this developed the AfricaGenWeb project which is the regional branch of the World GenWeb Project.

The AfricaGenWeb Project is an on-line data repository for queries, family histories, and source records as well as being resource center to identify other on-line databases and resources to assist researchers. Through information provided to the various country pages people interested in tracing their family history and roots are able to find, contribute and extend the knowledge of their families and cultures.

Volunteers are needed to host country pages, provide look-up resources, transcribe data, etc... If you might be interested please email or visit out volunteers page by clicking here....
